On Friday 13th December, Adam from Historic Workshops came into school to work alongside Year 6 children and delivered a workshop on ancient Greece. This supplemented the unit that Year 6 have studied this term. The workshop included a range of activities, including battle formations, ancient Greek writing, city states, and more. The children found the workshop extremely exciting and informative and it was a fantastic way to bring their learning to life.

Year 3 enjoyed a Stone Age workshop where they were able to take part in a variety of stone age activities. During the day they found out about the various tribes that lived in different periods in the Stone Age, made Stone Age Tools, created their own cave paintings and learnt about archery.

On Tuesday 3rd December, the Nursery parents attended the Snowman workshop. The parents were able to find out about the topic for this half term and the children were given a snowman project to complete at home. All children performed the ‘Snowflake song’, ‘Twinkle Twinkle little star’ and ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’ beautifully. The Nursery children and parents enjoyed refreshments in the conservatory.

Shaw Hill Primary School Fencing Team competed in a team competition at RGS Worcester on Sunday 1st December. Competing in the under 10s category, it was the team’s first tournament experience, their first time using electronic scoring equipment and their first competition against fencers from other schools and clubs.

On Friday 8th November the Nursery children took part in a musical adventure as Helen (who played the cello) and Bryony (who played the violin) told a beautiful tale by Oliver Jeffers called ‘The Way Back Home'. The children listened to the story which was told through different voices, songs, rhythms, beats and actions. The children thoroughly enjoyed this workshop.

The pupils in Key Stage 2 enjoyed a music concert on Monday afternoon, with music from the pupils who have attended music clubs all year. Children from years 3, 4 and 5 performed pieces on the keyboards, guitars and then finished with 3 songs by the rock band. It was enjoyed by everyone!

Following a great Sports Day, we were excited to find out the winners in each event! Pupils who won 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place, received medals and a trophy was awarded to the house with the most points! Well done to Barnfield!

On Thursday 13th June, Year 6 enjoyed participating in a fantastic World War II workshop. The day began with storytelling of The Great War and the aftermath, before examining primary and secondary sources. The children later enjoyed activities in Morse code and secret cyphers, and finished the day being put through a rigorous 1940s workout.

Year 6 enjoyed a visit to Drayton Manor, where they got to experience a fun-filled day at a theme park. We carefully studied the fairground rides for our current DT topic – fairgrounds. In this topic the children will be designing and building their own fairground rides. We also got to explore different forms of advertisements and will use our experiences to support our computing unit where we will design and programme our own digital advertisements for Drayton Manor. We all had a great day: the kids loved every second of it! Well done Year 6 for another great trip!

Year 3 had a fantastic trip to Western-Super-Mare. It was a long journey but the children were very excited. We were lucky enough to have a ride on a donkey and eat some delicious ice cream. In addition, we had some fun on the beach playing in the sand and having a picnic. The day ended with us going for a walk along the pier. It is safe to say that both the staff and the children had a wonderful day.

Reception trip to Hatton Park 24th May 2024

On Thursday 24th May, Reception went to Hatton Country Park. The children saw lots of farm animals and pets; they explored the farm grounds and talked about the animals they saw. Children had the opportunity to feed and pet the animals; they really enjoyed petting the donkeys and guinea pigs! The tractor ride through the farm grounds, was so much fun! Reception ended the day at the super slide mania - it was amazing!

On Thursday 23rd May Nursery hosted a ‘Tiger Who Came To Tea’ party. The children made their own cakes and sandwiches to eat at the party after meeting the chef from the school kitchen. Parents and carers were invited to the party and everyone enjoyed the refreshments and cakes the children had made.

In this meeting, parents were given information about the upcoming Phonics Screening Test that their children will be taking part in during the final summer term as well as different ways that parents can support their children with their phonics over the half term holiday and the lead-up to the Phonics Screening Test. Thank you to all of the parents that attended this very important meeting.

Year 3 trip to Lunt Fort 16th May 2024

On Thursday 16th May. Year 3 visited Lunt Fort, as part of our history topic, the Romans. It was a fun packed day, as the children learnt about the Roman army and the armour that the soldiers would have worn. Furthermore, the children also had the opportunity to try on the armour, like the sword and shield. The children thoroughly enjoyed handling artefacts from the past and using their knowledge to discuss what they thought different artefacts would have been used for. Overall, we had a fantastic day learning about the Romans.

Year 5 trip to the Black Country Museum 7th May 2024

Year 5 had a very enjoyable day, learning about the Victorian era, at the Black Country Museum. They had the opportunity to look around houses and shops of that era, as well as a trip down the mines and a visit to the school room. One of the highlights was, of course, seeing the teachers being told off by the very strict school teacher!

Year 2 trip to Twycross Zoo 3rd May 2024

Year 2 had a fantastic day out at Twycross Zoo! The children were thrilled to see a wide variety of animals and learn about their habitats. Throughout the visit, they discovered numerous fascinating animal facts, sparking their curiosity and imagination. One of the highlights was navigating the Gruffalo Land and trying to find our way out! It was an unforgettable trip filled with education and fun!

On Wednesday 1st May, year 4 had a Viking workshop. They became Vikings, wearing typical Viking clothing and playing Viking games. The pupils then worked as archaeologists and discovered artefacts during this period. They even learnt how to use a bow and arrow as this was used traditionally in battle.

On Friday 26th April, year 5 pupils were taught basic first aid, to support the PSHE topic. They learnt how to put someone into the recovery position, create a sling and bandage a wound, amongst much more.

Year 6 enjoyed a visit to Cadbury World, where they learnt about the history of the Cadbury brand and its origin. As activities, Year 6 sampled Cadbury products, tempered their own chocolate and experienced the site’s 4D cinema and ride. They had a wonderful time!

On Tuesday 22nd April, the Little Dots Play Village came to Shaw Hill Primary School. The Nursery children had the opportunity to experience a range of role play areas to explore, enjoy and discover. The children were able to relive topics and themes they had been learning about throughout their nursery year. It was the perfect day for small people with big imaginations!

On Friday 19th April, year 3 children had a Roman Workshop. The children learnt a lot about the Romans and how they conquered different countries. We paid particular attention to what the Romans did to shape Britain to what it is today and we learnt about their powerful leaders. The children also found out about the tactics that the Roman army used, which enabled them to be so successful. The most enjoyable part of the day for the children was when we had a go at learning how to use a bow and an arrow in archery.
