Pupils enjoyed World Book Day again this year! While dressed as characters or 'something beautiful' they had the chance to take part in the assembly quiz and enjoyed being read to by a different class teacher!

Following an exciting Science week, it was great to share the activities and experiments that took place in each year group with each other during Friday's assembly. We were able to view photos and find out about each year group's findings as well as the workshops with the Science Boffin.

Year 5 trip to the Gurdwara 29th Jan 2025

Year 5 were incredibly lucky to visit the Gurdwara on the Soho Road in Birmingham. During their visit, they found out about the origins and the construction of the building along with how it is used to serve the community. Year 5 were taken into the prayer hall, up to the dome where the inside has been decorated with mirror mosaic and finally the langar hall where they were served with food. The pupils enjoyed their visit and had a lot to talk about following their trip.

On Monday 20th January, Mo from Animals in Hands visited Nursery. He brought with him a rabbit, a chinchilla, a snake, an owl and a spider The Nursery children thoroughly enjoyed learning about and interacting with the animals. They were able to touch and feed them and observed how different animals move and behave.

Year 3 trip to Birmingham Central Mosque 16th Jan 2025

On Thursday 16th January, Year 3 visited the Birmingham Central Mosque. They enjoyed learning all about Islam and how Muslims worship Allah through 5 daily prayers. They listened to the Islamic call to prayer (Adhan) and heard the stories behind how the mosque was built. They also enjoyed seeing a large copy of the holy book: The Qur’an.

On Friday 13th December, Adam from Historic Workshops came into school to work alongside Year 6 children and delivered a workshop on ancient Greece. This supplemented the unit that Year 6 have studied this term. The workshop included a range of activities, including battle formations, ancient Greek writing, city states, and more. The children found the workshop extremely exciting and informative and it was a fantastic way to bring their learning to life.

Year 3 enjoyed a Stone Age workshop where they were able to take part in a variety of stone age activities. During the day they found out about the various tribes that lived in different periods in the Stone Age, made Stone Age Tools, created their own cave paintings and learnt about archery.

On Tuesday 3rd December, the Nursery parents attended the Snowman workshop. The parents were able to find out about the topic for this half term and the children were given a snowman project to complete at home. All children performed the ‘Snowflake song’, ‘Twinkle Twinkle little star’ and ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’ beautifully. The Nursery children and parents enjoyed refreshments in the conservatory.

Shaw Hill Primary School Fencing Team competed in a team competition at RGS Worcester on Sunday 1st December. Competing in the under 10s category, it was the team’s first tournament experience, their first time using electronic scoring equipment and their first competition against fencers from other schools and clubs.

On Friday 8th November the Nursery children took part in a musical adventure as Helen (who played the cello) and Bryony (who played the violin) told a beautiful tale by Oliver Jeffers called ‘The Way Back Home'. The children listened to the story which was told through different voices, songs, rhythms, beats and actions. The children thoroughly enjoyed this workshop.

To mark the end of another successful year, we awarded children from across the school for their behaviour and attitudes towards school. We also celebrated the achievements of pupils in year 2 and year 6 for their attainment in their SATs tests.

The pupils in Key Stage 2 enjoyed a music concert on Monday afternoon, with music from the pupils who have attended music clubs all year. Children from years 3, 4 and 5 performed pieces on the keyboards, guitars and then finished with 3 songs by the rock band. It was enjoyed by everyone!

Following a great Sports Day, we were excited to find out the winners in each event! Pupils who won 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place, received medals and a trophy was awarded to the house with the most points! Well done to Barnfield!

World War II workshop for year 6 13th Jun 2024

On Thursday 13th June, Year 6 enjoyed participating in a fantastic World War II workshop. The day began with storytelling of The Great War and the aftermath, before examining primary and secondary sources. The children later enjoyed activities in Morse code and secret cyphers, and finished the day being put through a rigorous 1940s workout.

Year 6 enjoyed a visit to Drayton Manor, where they got to experience a fun-filled day at a theme park. We carefully studied the fairground rides for our current DT topic – fairgrounds. In this topic the children will be designing and building their own fairground rides. We also got to explore different forms of advertisements and will use our experiences to support our computing unit where we will design and programme our own digital advertisements for Drayton Manor. We all had a great day: the kids loved every second of it! Well done Year 6 for another great trip!

Year 3 had a fantastic trip to Western-Super-Mare. It was a long journey but the children were very excited. We were lucky enough to have a ride on a donkey and eat some delicious ice cream. In addition, we had some fun on the beach playing in the sand and having a picnic. The day ended with us going for a walk along the pier. It is safe to say that both the staff and the children had a wonderful day.

Reception trip to Hatton Park 24th May 2024

On Thursday 24th May, Reception went to Hatton Country Park. The children saw lots of farm animals and pets; they explored the farm grounds and talked about the animals they saw. Children had the opportunity to feed and pet the animals; they really enjoyed petting the donkeys and guinea pigs! The tractor ride through the farm grounds, was so much fun! Reception ended the day at the super slide mania - it was amazing!

On Thursday 23rd May Nursery hosted a ‘Tiger Who Came To Tea’ party. The children made their own cakes and sandwiches to eat at the party after meeting the chef from the school kitchen. Parents and carers were invited to the party and everyone enjoyed the refreshments and cakes the children had made.

On Tuesday 21st May, Year 1 held a Phonics Workshop for parents. In this meeting, parents were given information about the upcoming Phonics Screening Test that their children will be taking part in during the final summer term as well as different ways that parents can support their children with their phonics over the half term holiday and the lead-up to the Phonics Screening Test. Thank you to all of the parents that attended this very important meeting.
